Top 10 Famous TV and Movie Dog Names – 10. July, 2017

As a dog owner, one of your most important jobs is choosing a name for your dog. A name is more than just something you yell when your dog is getting into trouble – it is also a description of his personality. If you need help finding the perfect name for your dog, consider some of these famous dog names from television shows and movies.

  1. Lassie – The famous TV show Lassie starred a beautiful female Collie of the same name. This show is based on a short story written by Eric Knight which was later expanded into a full-length novel and then developed into a TV show. Lassie is known for her devotion to her human friend Timmy as well as for her intelligence and resourcefulness.
  2. Benji – This name belongs to a mixed-breed dog who starred in several movies filmed between 1974 and 2000. Known for being in the right place at the right time, Benji was beloved by everyone in his community and, in the end, he was the hero of the story.
  3. Eddie – This name belongs to the cutest, furriest cast member for the show “Frasier”. Eddie was a Jack Russel terrier and, during the height of the show, he received more fan letters than any of the other cast members. Eddie’s real name was Moose and he was the runt of his litter. It only goes to show that the best things come in small packages!
  4. Stella – The French Bulldog owned by the Pritchett family in the Modern Family TV show is named Stella, though her real name is Brigitte. The original dog was replaced for the fourth season of the show by a dog named Beatrice.

Any dog with a love for life and a bit of a silly side would be lucky to have this name.
  6. Beethoven – This name belongs to the big, drooling St. Bernard who starred in the films of the same name. While Beethoven was known for causing trouble (largely due to his size and his clumsy nature), he was loyal to a fault and, in the end, protected his family when they needed him most.

This movie follows the story of a stray dog named Old Yeller who was adopted by a boy in post-Civil War Texas. Though he eventually met an unfortunate end, Old Yeller was the most loyal canine companion ever seen.
  8. OtisThe Adventures of Milo and Otis starred an orange tabby kitten (Milo) and a pug named Otis who become best friends and accidentally get lost together which results in a great adventure as they find their way home.
  9. Hooch – Hooch is the canine companion to Tom Hanks who plays an American detective named Turner in the 1989 film, Turner and Hooch. Though he had a tendency to drool and get into trouble, this pair still managed to save the day.
  10. Brian – The dog character from the animated series Family Guy is Brian Griffin. Brian is an anthropomorphic dog who walks on his hind legs and talks just like any other member of the family.

Asta The Wire-Haired Fox Terrier – 5. June, 2007

This week’s name is:

Asta

Asta (born Skippy) was a Wire-Haired Fox Terrier best known for his acting work in the 1934 detective comedy The Thin Man. He was trained by owners Henry East and Gale Henry East, and Frank Weatherwax. His other notable film performances include The Awful Truth (1937), as Mr. Smith, the subject of a custody dispute between Cary Grant and Irene Dunne; Bringing Up Baby (1938), as George, the bone-hiding pup belonging to Katharine Hepburn’s aunt; and Topper Takes a Trip (1938), as Mr. Atlas. Due to the enormous popularity of Asta, interest in pet terriers skyrocketed.

Interestingly, the original character of Asta in Dashiell Hammett’s book of the The Thin Man was not a Wire-Haired Fox Terrier, but a Schnauzer.

The American Magazine detailed Asta’s professional life in an August 1938 profile of the East kennels, titled “A Dog’s Life in Hollywood”:

His owner is Mrs. Gale Henry East, once a prominent movie comedienne. … “When Skippy has to drink water in a scene, the first time he does it he really drinks, If there are retakes and he’s had all the water he can drink, he’ll go through the scene just as enthusiastically as though his throat were parched, but he’ll fake it. If you watch closely you’ll see he’s just going through the motions of lapping and isn’t really picking up water at all. And, because he has a sense of humor, he loves it when you laugh and tell him you’ve caught him faking but that it’s all right with you.

“Treat a dog kindly and he’ll do anything in the world for you.”

Sachi – Barbie’s Puppy – 5. April, 2007

This week’s name is:

Sachi

The ever popular Barbie doll even had a puppy! Not being into dolls, I didn’t know that.

Apparently Barbie’s puppy Sachi even comes with lots of dressy things to wear; a tail ruffle, a ruffled collar, a bandana, a baseball hat, sunglasses and ear ruffle; it also has a disc and a brush.

I personally think it looks a little like white skunk, but it is cute and has a great name!

Who knew!

Spike the Bulldog – 28. November, 2006
