German Male Dog Names

German Shepherds, German Shorthaired Pointer, German Wirehaired Pointer, Doberman Pinscher, German Mastiff, and Schnauzers, are just some of the many wonderful dog breeds to choose a Germanic-type name.

The need for good German male dog names:

Interstingly enough, the Doberman got its name from Herr Doberman who was a door-to-door tax collector who needed a watchful guard dog to accompany him on his rounds. In the late 1800's he set about to create an alert, streamlined guard dog which he did by crossing German Shepherds with German Pinscher and later crosses with black and tan Manchester Terrior, Greyhound, and Weimaraner. As its fame grew, as a breed and family pet, the Doberman eventually rose to to be the second most popular breed in America in 1977.....thus the need for German dog names!

Name: Berrin (like a bear)

Story: 2 years ago we wanted a German Shepherd Dog and found a breeder close by with pups and went to visit and maybe pick one out. So we looked and found the perfect puppy and our daughters swore he looked like a bear cub. So in looking for names for our new found pup, we came across the name Berrin which is German for "like a bear", the name fit perfect. Berrin didn't get to spend much time on earth, but he was truly loved and made his way into the hearts of many, even outside our immediate family.

Name: Duesseldorf - Duessel for short

Story: My daschund of 15 years was named Duesseldorf...Duessel for short. The "dorf" came from my last name, Deardorff (and it was a nickname given to me by my co-workers at the time); Duessel, because it was German and a German dog needs a German name...or so a friend of our family told me.

I thought it was original, and it fit the dog very well. I'd like to share his memory with others!

Karan Deardorff
